Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness

Who is eligible for PAIMI services?

Any individual who has a diagnosis of serious mental illness may be eligible for PAIMI services. The program places a priority on serving persons with serious mental illness who live in facilities that provide some kind of care and treatment. It also serves individuals with serious mental illness who live in the community.

What services do we provide?

We are a regional legal resource for the greater Hudson River region and as a statewide impact litigation and backup unit for PAIMI. We provide a wide range of services for individuals with mental illness, including:

Advice/professional assistance
Administrative remedies
Technical assistance
Legal assistance
There is no charge for our services.

What region do we cover?

We provide direct representation under the PAIMI program only to individuals located in the following counties: Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester.

Disability Advocates also serves as a statewide impact litigation and backup unit for PAIMI.

Does the PAIMI program serve everyone who is eligible?

Due to limited resources, Disability Advocates cannot serve every person who seeks our assistance. Cases are accepted based on merit, program priorities, and available staff and resources. For a link to the priorities of the PAIMI program, please click here.
